BOGOTA (AP) -- A car bomb exploded near a police post in the city of Cali in western Colombia on Sunday night, killing at least one person and injuring at least 18 others after officers were lured to the scene by a bogus fire alarm, authorities said.
It appeared the person who set off the blast was killed by police trying to flee the attack site, Cali's mayor, Jorge Ivan Ospina, told reporters. The identities of the victim and the alleged bomber were not immediately released.
Cali's police chief, Gen. Gustavo Ricaurte, said the bomb went off when police were responding to what turned out to be a false fire alarm.
President Alvaro Uribe blamed the country's main rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, for the attack. He did not say why the rebel group was suspected.
A doctor at the city's San Juan de Dios hospital, Ivan Gonzalez, told Caracol Radio that 18 people were taken there with injuries suffered in the blast, six of them children. He said most of the injuries were minor.
The bomb went off five blocks from the city's courthouse, where an Aug. 31 bombing killed four people and wounded 26.
